Friday marked the first time Giancarlo Stanton was in the New York Yankees line-up.
Last year’s National League MVP debuted in the No. 2 spot in the batting order in the Yankees’ spring training opener against the Detroit Tigers.
He posted a .675 slugging percentage in the 2-hole last season with the Miami Marlins.
The second spot in the line-up was often held by fellow slugger Aaron Judge last year. Judge was not in the starting lineup for the spring opener, which delayed the much anticipated first look at the duo that combined for 111 homers in 2017.
The line-up for the spring opener focused more on up-and-coming players, such as Gleyber Torres and Miguel Andujar.
Torres hit sixth and played second base, while Andujar batted eighth and played third base.
“I think they’re both going to be tremendous players,” manager Aaron Boone said Tuesday, according to ESPN.com. “I love who they are. You can tell they enjoy being on the baseball field. You can tell they’re confident in their ability, the way they move around, yet there’s a humility about them.”
However, their chances of making the Opening Day roster seem to have decreased this week as New York acquired Brandon Drury from the Arizona Diamondbacks in a three-team trade.
Drury hit .267 with 13 home runs and 63 RBI in 135 games last season.
The Yankees have added another star with Super Bowl champion Russell Wilson making his spring training debut on Monday. Wilson played in the Minor Leagues in 2010 and 2011.
With all these new faces at spring training, the Yankees have already garnered a lot of attention before they even took the field for their first exhibition.
