Fifth-seeded Iowa topped No. 4 Kentucky 86-72 behind a record-setting performance from freshman Caitlin Clark. The nation’s leading scorer set a program record for points in an NCAA Tournament game with 35 points on 13-of-21 shooting. She outscored the Wildcats by herself in the first half 24-22. The guard also amassed seven rebounds and six assists.

Fellow No. 5 seed Georgia Tech defeated No. 4 West Virginia 73-56. The Yellow Jackets outscored the Mountaineers 22-9 in the third quarter. With the win, GT advances to its second ever Sweet 16 (with the other coming in 2012).

For Michigan, its ticket to the Sweet 16 is the program’s first. The sixth-seeded Wolverines edged No. 3 Tennessee 70-55. The Maize and Blue were led by Leigha Brown’s 23 points and a 19-point, 15-rebound performance for Naz Hillman.

“It means a ton [to reach the Sweet 16 for the first time],” Hillman said. “We’ve been talking a lot about building the foundation of our program and our team, and this is another building block for us.”

Standing in front of the Wolverines now is a team who is no stranger to the Sweet 16 in Baylor, who secured its spot in the second weekend for a 12th straight year. The second-seeded Bears routed No. 7 Virginia Tech 90-48 behind four players in double figures. They outscored the Hokies 46-4 in the paint. Moon Ursin and Dijonai Carrington score 21 apiece. Queen Egbo recorded 12 points, 13 rebounds and seven blocks.

Meanwhile, all four No. 1 seeds prevailed.

UConn coasted to an 83-47 win over No. 8 Syracuse in its second consecutive game without head coach Geno Auriemma. Freshman Paige Bueckers led the way with 20 points, five rebounds and four assists. In her first 2 career NCAA Tournament games, Bueckers posted 44 points, 14 rebounds, 10 assists, seven steals and two blocks. She became the only player (male or female) in the last 20 years to boast that stat line in any two-game span in the NCAA Tournament, according to STATS.

NC State needed a second-half comeback to beat No. 8 South Florida 79-67. The Wolfpack outscored the Bulls 24-11 in the third quarter. All five started scored at least 11 points.

Top-overall seed Stanford topped 8-seed Oklahoma State 73-62. The Cardinal outscored the Cowgirls by 14 in the second quarter and had four players in double figures.

South Carolina reached its seventh straight Sweet 16 with a 59-42 victory over No. 8 Oregon State. The Gamecocks outscored the Beavers 39-16 over the second and third quarters. Aliyah Boston tallied 19 points.

The final eight spots of the Sweet 16 are set to be clinched Wednesday.
